What “residential VPN” actually means

The price gap is the honest trade. A VPN costs less because a datacenter IP is cheap to rent and shared. A residential proxy costs per GB because the IP class is what makes defended targets let the request through — and on a target with no defenses, the datacenter IP works just as well at a fraction of the cost.[1]
When to buy which
Buy a consumer VPN when: you want privacy from your ISP, you need to unblock geo-restricted streaming, or you want a flat monthly price and do not care what IP class you appear from. That is the honest job of the products on the VPN channel.
Buy a residential proxy when: the data only comes from a defended target, the results are location-specific (localized prices, ads, SERPs), or you are verifying what a real user in a specific city sees. That is the Proxy channel’s job.
Two honest boundaries. First, detection services track known residential-proxy pools too — the trust advantage over a datacenter IP is real but not infinite, and behavior still gets you caught regardless of IP class.[2] Second, a residential proxy does not make a collection job compliant with a platform’s terms; the technology changes what the target sees, not what the rules allow.
