Why accounts get linked

Platforms do not link accounts by magic. They score a small set of signals, and each one is checkable:

  • IP address. Every account seen from the same IP is one identity, full stop.
  • Browser fingerprint. Canvas, WebGL, fonts, timezone, user agent — the same browser profile across accounts is one browser.
  • Cookies and storage. Tracking cookies and localStorage carry identity between sessions.
  • Behavior and pacing. The same hours, the same click pattern, the same typing rhythm.

  1. One IP for everything. Every account on your VPN is behind the same shared exit IP. The accounts look linked because they are linked — by the IP they share.
  2. The IP class is wrong. Commercial VPN servers live in datacenters. Sites score hosting ranges as higher risk by default, and a VPN exit is shared by many customers with mixed traffic — more scrutiny, not less.[2]
  3. All eggs in one IP. One account gets flagged, the shared IP’s reputation drops, and every other account on that same connection inherits the damage.

Where a VPN still earns a place

Not everything is isolation. A VPN is worth keeping for three specific jobs in a multi-account setup:

  • Geo consistency. All accounts for the US market keep a US location at the country layer. This is the one thing a VPN does well here.
  • Keeping your home IP out of the picture. Your own residential IP is your most identifying asset; a VPN hides it from the sites you visit.
  • A cheap layer for low-stakes accounts. Accounts with nothing to lose are fine on a VPN. The moment the account has value, the IP layer should be per-account.

Two rules if you use one: keep every account on the same VPN country (a UK account on a US IP is itself a detection signal), and never mix VPN country with the browser’s locale and timezone.[2]

What it will not do

  • It will not make accounts compliant with platform rules. That is a terms question, not a technology one.
  • It will not hide payment links. The same card or PayPal across accounts is a link no proxy fixes.
  • It will not fix behavior. Ten accounts that move and click identically get linked regardless of IPs.

Does a VPN hide that the accounts belong to one person?
